May 31, 2019 (New York, NY)Executive Director Josephine Brown and Caregiver Social Worker Megan Christ attended the preview event for "Spirit in the Cane," a new play written and starring Nikki Khouri about her grandfather's dementia. "With a little help from a cane, the audience is guided through grief, memory, and joy!" The event was partly a fundraiser to produce the play, but also a kick-off for Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month with some of the funds raised going to dementia-care nonprofits — including New York Memory Center. Josephine and Megan were there to see the play, accept the donation, and speak to the community members in attendance about Alzheimer’s/dementia and the vital work we do. March 4, 2019 (Brooklyn, NY) Northfield Bank Celebrates the Opening of their Brooklyn Heights Branch
Northfield Bank celebrated the opening of their new Court Street office located at 112 Court Street, Brooklyn, NY with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday, March 2, 2019. As part of the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Northfield donated $1,500 to three area organizations: Heights and Hills, the Brooklyn Heights Association, and the New York Memory Center to support their work within the neighborhood. June 29, 2018 (Brooklyn, NY)New York State Senator Velmanette Montgomery (center) stopped to speak with Caregiver Social Worker Megan Christ and Adult Day Services Manager Margarita Diaz at the New York Memory Center table during Assembly Member Jo Anne Simon‘s 4th Annual Senior Resource Fair. Over 60 groups participated, providing senior citizens with information on legal services, health care, government and community resources, and more. The fair was held at St. Francis College in Brooklyn Heights.
June 13, 2018 (Red Hook, Brooklyn) New York Memory Center held its 35th Anniversary Gala on June 13 at Liberty Warehouse – a beautiful location in Red Hook. The event was a grand success, raising over $20,000 along with being a lot of fun. We were also pleased to honor seven people and groups who have supported the Center over the decades. Music by Ismail Butera & Velvet Jubilee entertained us throughout the evening. May 24, 2018 (Albany, NY): Josephine Brown and Megan Christ presented a workshop entitled “Best Practices in Joint Enrichment: New York Memory Center’s Memory Arts Café” at the New York State Department of Health Alzheimer’s Disease Program Annual Contractors Meeting at the Desmond Hotel in Albany. Feedback after the presentation was very positive.
March 15, 2018 (New York): Classes Offered to Raise Alzheimer’s Awareness. Watch the story on News Channel 12 Brooklyn, which they included as part of Women’s History Month because experts say Alzheimer’s disease affects more women than men. The New York City Alzheimer’s Association offered the “Learn the Stages of Alzheimer’s Disease and other types of dementia” workshop in partnership with New York Memory Center at Restoration Plaza in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood.
