Learn the Stages of Alzheimer’s Disease
Workshop Series to be offered in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn

[New York, NY, February 6, 2018]  Every 66 seconds someone in the United States is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. While the chances of being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias increase with age, it can also strike adults at any age, and the risks are higher for African-American and Hispanic populations. Families, friends, and many health care workers are often unprepared for what comes next. According to the Alzheimer’s Association’s 2017 Facts and Figures report, 5.5 million people in the U.S. are currently living with Alzheimer’s disease; therefore the need for public education is great.

 

In response, the Family Resource Program at New York Memory Center and the Alzheimer’s Association – NYC Chapter are partnering with Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation to offer a three-session “Learn the Stages of Alzheimer’s disease” workshop using the foundation of the Alzheimer’s Association’s Living with Alzheimer’s series. The series will be held at Restoration Plaza Economic Solutions Center, 1368 Fulton Street, in the Bedford Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn, on three Thursdays beginning March 1.

 

Presentations will cover the early, middle, and late stages of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, and information about community resources and available services will be provided. The series is free and open to the public. Each session will be held from 10 AM to 2 PM and include lunch; preregistration is required by contacting Megan Christ at New York Memory Center, 718-499-7701.

 

The series is especially valuable for family members or friends caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias; healthcare professionals and home health aides; and community members interested in learning more. Participants will receive certificates for attending and completing the full series of workshops.

 

New York Memory Center (nymemorycenter.org) was founded in 1983 in Brooklyn as a day program for older adults who have cognitive, physical, and emotional limitations. Programs are designed to maintain or improve their level of functioning so that they may enjoy their later years at home and within the community. Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation (restorationplaza.org) is the nation’s first community development organization, founded in 1967 by the late Senator Robert F. Kennedy and many other stalwarts of the Civil Rights movement. The organization provides a broad range of services aimed at improving the quality of life in Central Brooklyn: education, job training, affordable housing, financial literacy, business development, public health, and arts and culture. The “Learn the Stages of Alzheimer’s Disease” workshop aligns with Restoration’s Connection to Care program & Center for Healthy Neighborhoods which aims to bring mental health awareness, coping skills, psychoeducation and screenings to community residents. Professional staff at Restoration will be available to assist participants with further resources, not only to support families in dealing with dementia, but also connecting them with services that will further strengthen families and household such as financially counseling, career training, and income supports towards overall family health.
